How much is 1 part when feeding a baby bird?

by Aiden Zamora on January 21, 2009

I have a Lovebird, who just had 2 eggs hatch. One she isn't really paying too much attention to and the other she does. I bought baby bird formula, just in case I have to hand feed. It asks for 1 part formula and 6 parts water. Can anyone please explain to me, how much exactly that is.

You really should have someone show you how to handfeed you can kill the bird if not

Also when feeding a day old chick the formula will have to be a looser consistency than a older chick You also must feed Every 2 hours around the clock So do NOT start what you are not planning to finish. This is Not a easy process you need a brooder set up etc etc etc
If this is your first time I would find a mentor breeder who lives near you to help you learn

if you need help locating help email me through my profile i will put you in touch with someone near you to help

believe me I was in the same exact place you were many years ago and if not for my mentor i would have surely killed my chicks.
Are you feeding a good soft diet and egg food??
Vegetables and fruits too as well as giving a lot of fresh water
also be sure to have a little substrate in the nest box floor to be sure that they do not end up splay legged

when they say one part this or that its a ratio….
1 part formula and 6 parts water means 1 cup formula and 6 cups water. BUT a PART can be any size… 1 oz formula to 6 oz water. or 1 ml formula to 6ml water as long as the ratio is the same then the mix will turn out properly… Just estimate how much you might need and start from there.

Hope this helps

A part is whatever you want it to be. If you want it to be a teaspoonful, mix one teaspoonful of formula with 6 teaspoonfuls of water. If you want one part to be the full bottle of formula, mix in a larger container with 6 bottles of water.

The 1 to 6 parts is simply a ratio, just like mixing a can of frozen concentrated orange juice. It tells you what ratio to mix so it tastes right, but it doesn't tell you how much you (or the bird) should drink.

It is the proportion of one to the other. If you use tablespoons, use 1 tablespoon of formula and add 6 tablespoons of water. It will work for any unit of measure, though.

There is a LOT to know when it comes to handrearing babies. Since everyone has already addressed the 1 part formula question, please take some time to research feeding frequency, temperatures (environment *and* formula temps), and most importantly, you need to learn proper handfeeding technique. It is VERY easy to accidentally kill a baby bird if someone does not know how to properly handfeed.

Kaytee has a great handfeeding educational video on their website. It will show you mixing, cleaning, and handfeeding technique.

one part refers to any measurement, when it says add 1 part to 6 parts its like 1 teaspoon to 6 teasoons, or 1 cup to 6 cups, just equal parts.

ok you need to STOP breeding birds. after these two babies grow up [or after you kill them because you dont know wtf you're doing], just separate your male and female. you should not be hand feeding baby birds if you have to ask this question. be careful not to aspirate.

Sweetie, it's just a ratio. 1 teaspoon formula and 6 teaspoons water. No need to worry, it's pretty easy. WAKE AND BAKE GIRL, how do you know she is breeding? It could just be that she has two love birds, who are doing what nature intended them to do. Don't be a prude and assume. If you had actually READ it, she is just asking since the mother isn't really paying too much attention to one baby; worse case scenario she was getting prepared to feed the baby bird herself; AGAIN if the mother rejected it. I suggest you stop baking, to clear that head of yours. This way you can comprehend, and distinguish the ACTUAL meaning and question in a sentence.
