How many people are needed to back 1 US Marine ground troop in action? For example, how many are needed to keep him up to date on his equipment, food supplies, further training, etc.? If you were to put it into a ratio of how many backstage hands versus 1 guy out front, what would it be? Finally, if that soldier didn't have have one of those hands helping him, just how effective would he be?
The actual Ratio is 7-1…
It takes 7 REMF's to support 1 Combat Marine…
I have never heard a Marine being a Force of One…
Think you are talking about the Army…
The US Marines are a closely knit COMBAT TEAM…

I don't know the answer, but I do know that what you're describing is called the "teeth to tail ratio". Hope that's helpful.

now that's a hell of a comparison to make between a band on stage and a marine in combat…..but having experience in both areas….
any marine will tell you that a marine is a force of one and self-sufficient…..if he wasn't he wouldn't have made it to the point where he could be called a marine.
any band member will also tell you that you have to be self sufficient. how many people lug in my equipment, up stairs, across parking lots, from trailer to stage, in all weather? one. me.
and the other members of my band do the same with their equipment and we all as a group handle the PA and lighting gear as a group.
most "stage help" have nothing to do with the band and are contracted to hang lighting, setup stages and the like, but let one of them near my guitars, amps, mikes or other gear? never.
just as a marine would never depend on anyone else for his own survival, i'll never depend on anyone else to handle my business on stage for me.
i know that's taking your question a little literally, but both sides would be offended to have it inferred that we need to depend on anyone else for our success….we don't

Historically, "tooth to tail" ratio in the Army is about two to one, and that's just military logistics personnel in theater. That's been reduced significantly in recent years by the use of contractors. (So has it been really reduced?)
So I'd guess it's probably about 4 or 5 to one when you also consider those personnel involved in training and acquisiton of materiel.
The Marines would probably be considerably less since a significant amount of their logistics and acquisition is handled by the Navy.

when i was in the Corps, i was told it took 5 other Marines to keep one Marine in the field,…..

Its about 3 or 4 to one, but when you factor in equipment production and food production, depending on what your job is, the ratio can get to be 10 or 20 to 1 when you add the civilians that actually make the equipment.

The Marine Corps can be likened to a hive of bees. Each bee can hurt you. Each bee has it's own particular, unique job in the hive. Some gather food, some protect the hive, some tend to and train younger bees, some go out to find enemies and fight them. They are all interconnected. Very good question!

26 years as a Marine.
There are at least ten support troops for every single front line one! If there are 120K in country then only on tenth of that are actually front line people! So you figure it out, what that means! How much support does a marine need to throw a puppy over a cliff to it's death on the rocks below? Why hasn't the Corp charged this creep yet?
